The Goombay Smash

Today is Superbowl Sunday and one of my favorite days of the year. I get to make drinks and eat unhealthy party foods and watch the biggest football game of the year, not to mention all of the great commercials. So in lo of that, I am also making one of my favorite drinks.

The Goombay smash. I fell in love with this particularly delicious drink at Reggae Sunday in St. Augustine, Fl. I typically like drinks with a lot of pineapple in them(as this one does), so it immediately won my vote for Drink of the Day. It's spiced rum, coconut rum, apricot brandy, orange juice, and pineapple juice.

Lets start off by talking about my awesome shaker. I purchased this great, indestructible glass shaker at Chili's a few years ago and didn't really have that many chances to use it until now. Seriously though, you can't break it. When I bought the damn thing I dropped it on concrete. Nothing happened. It just kind of rolled away from the abusive new owner that was me. I was embarrassed as all hell. I felt like there was this huge spectacle in the parking lot and quite families were whispering things about the drunk girl that can't hold it together enough to make it to her car. It was terrible, I was cursing and people were continuing to stare. Not only was I not drunk, but I hadn't even had more than a single tiny margarita. Hardly enough to affect me.

But enough about that, lets talk about whats going into this delicious drink baby of mine. The spiced rum I have is Calypso's Spiced Rum. It's a lot cheaper than Captain Morgan, and it's almost as good. I like it and it doesn't burn going down. I did buy Malibu Coconut Rum for this. It's my favorite brand and even though I wasn't willing to spend that much on coconut rum, I sucked it up, why? Because most bottom shelf coconut rums are not very tasty to me, besides that's what the recipe called for, so yeah. The last is the apricot brandy, I didn't know if I'd ever had the stuff, but if its in a Goombay then I've had it before. News to me. The first thing I noticed about this brandy was the smell. It had a wonderful scent. It wasn't to strong or to "alcholy" but it smelled really nice. The brand name is Dekuyper, I honestly don't know if this is a good brand or not but it seemed to play well with the other kids so it's a win for me.

To make the drink, it's one ounce of spiced rum, one ounce of coconut rum, and one quarter ounce of apricot brandy. The brandy I pretty much guesstimated on. My measuring cup/shot glass didn't have that option so I guessed, then it's two ounces of both orange juice and pineapple juice. Both of which I bought at the liquor store, 'cause I'm all about one stop shoppin'.

And here is the final product. The recipe I have called for a maraschino cherry and orange slice for garnish. I thought I had cherries left over from making chocolate covered cherry cookies and I couldn't find them so after looking for about ten minutes I gave up the search, and I only had clementines, which I'm sure would have worked, but let's face it, I was not waiting any longer to slice those little devils just to garnish this drink when I was going to down it in less time than it took me to give up the search for the cherries. Besides whats was the point? I only had half the ingredients for the garnish, and its in a fancy glass, how much more does a girl need to do?

I decided it was time to try my concoction. It was absolutely delicious, just like the ones at Reggae Sunday. I was really happy with it and ended up making one for my Mom and my Nana. They were a big hit and I ended up making a few rounds each. They were that good. And I was feeling pretty good after drinking a couple.
